EYFS/Development Matters update...

There has been a lot of confusion about the new 'Early Years Outcomes' document (launched September 2013). This is a non-statutory guide for practitioners and inspectors to help inform understanding of child development through the early years.

Its content is taken from the 'A Unique Child' section of Development Matters - in fact it IS the section from Development Matters covering 'A Unique Child', but under another name. So if you are looking for this guidance document (as opposed to the full non-statutory guidance given in Development Matters), then the first of our three SUPER-SIZE Development Wheels (covering A Unique Child) will meet your needs fully. Click here for details

Its official – Development Matters has NOT been replaced...
...and there are NO plans to replace it.

There was also confusion for a while that Development Matters has been replaced. It came about when the original information was moved from its original website and this was followed by the introduction of ‘Early Years Outcomes’.

The perception that came from this was that Development Matters had been replaced and we have been spending a great deal of time talking to childminders and practitioners these last few months about this. They had been told that it was the case or had been led to believe that it was - but this is simply not the case at all, and it has now been clarified by the DfE...
... so please note: The DfE have now confirmed that
Development Matters is here to stay (Nov 2013)

What follows below is the official line from the Department for Education (DfE) about Development Matters and Early Years Outcomes:-

Early Years Outcomes is a non-statutory aide for practitioners and inspectors to help understanding of child development through the early years. It is a guide to typical development while recognising that children develop at their own rates and in their own ways.

There is also a range of guidance available to support early years teaching. This includes Development Matters, which provides an approach to supporting the implementation of the EYFS. This is also non-statutory guidance and to clarify that the DfE have migrated Development Matters from the DfE website to the site that 4Children manages as DfE’s strategic partner.

In answer to a specific question about Development Matters, the DfE clearly says that; “there are no plans to make Development Matters unavailable in future and early years professionals are free to choose whether and how to use it”.

Our fantastic Super-size EYFS DevelopmentWheels were launched in early 2013. This set of three wheels cover the principles and themes of the 2012 EYFS in detail. Going through the Prime and Specific areas of the EYFS, our wheel covering 'A Unique Child' was out first, followed by 'Positive Relationships' and 'Enabling Environments'. Each Super-size wheel measures 440mm diameter (approx) and is ideal for hanging in a nursery, children's centre, classroom or other setting. Great for childminders too. Use these wheels and then hand out our standard size EYFS Early Learning Goals wheel to parents/carers to take away. Click here for details
